Every year the oenology team decides to bottle one or two monovarietal wines, from varieties that stood out that year.

In 2017, Alicante Bouschet was one of the chosen varieties. With great expression in the Alentejo, the most Portuguese foreign variety stood out this year in the Douro due to its structure and concentration.

The vineyards of Quinta da Boavista form part of the dazzling geometric scenery of man-made terraces, terraces and terraces on the schist slopes of the Douro River. The Alicante Bouschet is planted on terraces oriented to the Northeast, with less sunlight at the end of the day, with conditions conducive to good growth and balanced maturation.

It is the most Portuguese foreign variety. Originating in France, it is born from the crossing of Petit Bouchet and Grenache, being one of the most famous dye varieties. When planted in favorable soils and climates, it provides intense wines, with a deep color, good structure, concentration and enormous aging capacity. At Quinta da Boavista, on the northeast-facing terraces, it found the right conditions for a balanced and promising development.

Winemaking

At Quinta da Boavista, to ensure the preservation of the variety’s characteristics and total control of the production process, we resort to manual harvesting and hand picking of bunches, followed by destemming and gentle crushing of the berries.

As fermentation tanks we have traditional granite presses with foot treading, stainless steel fermentation vats and, for small batches, pvc food containers or fermentation in new 500 liter French wood barrels. Each of these types of fermentation gives the wine a particular style. As a winemaking philosophy we have only one: to delicately extract the best characteristics of our grapes.

Monovarietals are the only wines that age in 500 liter barrels. After an aging period, which varies between 15 and 20 months, bottling takes place. All wines are sealed with natural cork. Not being filtered or cold stabilized, they can give rise to a precipitate with age.

The dense and creased color awakens the senses for a wine of good concentration. The effluvium of red fruit wrapped in spicy notes of great freshness enhance its vigor and structure. It enters the mouth and unceremoniously invades every nook and cranny. Powerful, velvety, with full tannins, this is a wine with great charisma that captivates us with its seriousness and enraptures us with its restlessness.

As in 2015 and 2016, in 2017 the choice fell on Donzelinho Red. This variety is one of the classic varieties of the Douro region, referenced since 1531. With small and very compact bunches, with small berries and very thin skin, it gives rise to genuine and irreverent wines with a very gastronomic profile.

Every year, the oenology team decides to bottle one or two monovarietal wines, with varieties that stood out from the Reserve blend that year. As in 2013, when the first Quinta da Boavista wines were launched, and also in 2016, in 2017 the choice fell on Touriga Nacional, a red grape variety that is a key ingredient both for still wines and for fortified wines from the Douro region.

Before phylloxera devastated vineyards in Portugal, Touriga Nacional occupied a large part of the total planted area. However, later, because of its low yield, it was replaced by more productive varieties, and in the late 1980s it was not even part of the 15 most planted varieties in Portugal, representing less than 1% of the national stock. Today it is the third most planted and the most widespread Portuguese variety abroad. With firm tannins, it has the ideal structure for a monovarietal wine.

Boa-Vista Reserva Red is a wine that reflects the combination of multiple micro-terroirs. The different grape varieties, of different ages, at different altitudes and exposure to sunlight, are expressed here in a unique way, resulting in a multifaceted wine, inimitable in character, longevity and elegance.

This wine constitutes the ‘backbone’ of Quinta da Boavista’s portfolio and results from a blend made with grapes from old and more recent vineyards. In particular, this Reserva is produced using Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão and Old Vines.

Touriga Nacional is a red grape variety that is a key ingredient for both still and fortified wines from the Douro region. It presents bold notes of black fruits, commonly accompanied by memories of spices and violet.

Secondly, Touriga Franca is also one of the traditional varieties of the Douro region. More aromatic and lighter in structure, it is slightly less concentrated, Touriga Franca has high tannins and a fresh aroma of ripe red fruits, spices complemented by floral notes.

In turn, Tinto Cão is a variety that dates back to the origins of the region. Over the years, it has been proven that Tinto Cão develops better in areas of the region less exposed to sunlight. The milder climate allows the floral aromas of the variety to develop and stand out. Responsible for red wines with less color intensity, it has good levels of acidity and tannins.

All of these are combined with a variety of old vines from the 10 hectares of the Quinta which have vines over 80 years old.

Vibrant ruby color. It has an aroma of black fruit, of great breadth and generosity, well complemented by fresh notes of fine and elegant spice. In the mouth, vigor prevails, well-defined tannins that over time merge with the fruit and enhance the structure and finesse of the whole. Overflowing with freshness, this is a vigorous wine with a lot of life ahead of it.

Vinha do Ujo was planted in 1930, on pre-phylloxera horizontal terraces, with the soil supported by small shale walls. Its more than 25 varieties translate a diversity only possible to find in such old vineyards. Cemented in small terraces exposed to the North, between altitudes that vary from 180 to 210 meters, they are treated year after year by the experienced hands of those who experience the Douro day after day.

Winemaking

The fermentation of the grapes takes place in new 500 liter French wooden barrels. After a period of maceration, the resulting wine continues to age for 16 months in 225 liter French oak barrels. All wines are sealed with natural cork. Not being filtered or cold stabilized, they can give rise to a precipitate with age.

The intense ruby color prepares our nose for the different layers of red fruit wrapped in forest impressions and subtle hints of Indian ink. Haughty and seductive, in the mouth it proves to be even more intriguing, with an endless juice that with each aftertaste reveals the different hierarchies of fruit and spice. A wine that dazzles us with its elegance and vibrant grace.

Quinta da Boavista Vinha do Oratório is a wine whose grapes come from a single plot, which was named Oratório due to its impressive undulating terraces almost 8 meters high.

Ex-libris of Quinta da Boavista and Douro, the Vinha do Oratório is formed by high and curved terraces in the shape of an oratory that can reach 8 meters in height. The vineyard, facing East, has an altitude that varies between 80 and 175 meters and has a mixture of more than 25 Douro grape varieties. With an average age of over 90 years, these vines allow us to produce a wine of remarkable concentration and complexity.

Winemaking

Traditional granite lagares with foot treading were used as fermentation tanks, later the wine aged in French oak barrels for at least 18 months. All wines are sealed with natural cork. Not being filtered or cold stabilized, they can give rise to a precipitate with age.

Deep ruby color. On the nose, forest fruit notes dominate, with splashes of bergamot and soft menthols that point to an intoxicating freshness. In the mouth, everything agrees: silky tannins wander through the rich presence of fruit and the spicy touches of the barrel, which rejoice in an impeccable acidity. A wine of multiple complexities, which unfolds into heteronymous assortments throughout the tasting.
